Aladdin- Arab folktale of Aladdin

Aladdin is an American animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1992. The story is based on the Arab folktale of Aladdin and the magic lamp from One Thousand and One Nights and was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. Animations were based on the designs by the caricaturist Al Hirschfeld and the musical score was given by Alan Menken. The film hit the theatres on November 25, 1992 and went on to be the most successful film of the year.

The story revolves around a street urchin Aladdin who is the Diamond in the Rough and can enter the cave to collect the magical lamp. Jafar, Grand Vizier to the Sultan of Agrabah, has Aladdin abducted and imprisoned to finally lead him to the cave. Aladdin successfully collects the lamp and evades the tricks by Jafar. In the meantime, he meets the Sultan’s daughter jasmine and nourishes the dreams of marrying her. Aladdin releases the genie and is granted three wishes by him. Aladdin asks to become a prince for his first wish, so he can marry Jasmine and promises to release the genie in the last wish.

He returns to the Sultan as Prince Ali and asks for Jasmine’s hand. But Jafar detects the trick and captures Aladdin and has him thrown in the ocean. He requests genie to save him as his second wish and informs the Sultan about the bad intentions of Jafar. However, Jafar tricks him and abducts the magic lamp and makes his three wishes, becoming a genie being the last of the three. This imprisons him in the lamp and he is thrown away into the cave of wonders. At the end, Aladdin releases genie and gets engaged to Jasmine.

Aladdin was extremely successful and grossed over $217 million in the United States and over $504 million worldwide. The film acquired positive reviews although it was criticized by the Arabs for being racist. Aladdin won several awards including two Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards along with Annie Award for the Best Animated Feature.
