DreamWorks Animation

DreamWorks is a name that everybody who has a decent knowledge of films would have heard at least a fair number of times associated with some of the best films in Hollywood. However, this Film Studio also has a special department that is dedicated completely to the animation flicks and has some great biggies under its belt. The biggest success till date for DreamWorks as a whole Studio company has been churned out by the Animation wing of the company- the Shrek series, namely Shrek 2. Although DreamWorks Studio itself started off in 1994, its animation department came into being as recently as 2004 but has been a huge success since then.

The first of their full length animated feature films that was released was ‘Antz’ and this was released before the company itself had a dedicated animation department as such, this was in 1998 and followed it up with another great animation success in the same year ‘The Prince of Egypt’. Off to a great start, the special animation wing for the company as such was actually instigated to be built after the widespread success of ‘Shrek’ that was released in 2001. ‘Shrek’ became a worldwide instant success and called for a sequel ‘Shrek 2’ which was even more successful and the animation department of the Studio was born. IF Mickey Mouse did it for Disney then Shrek definitely did it for DreamWorks. Over the years, some great animation hits were created by the DreamWorks animation studio which includes such biggies as ‘Madagascar’ and ‘Kung Fu panda’.

Actually, DreamWorks is the animation studio that as a breakthrough in animation films in an era where Disney held the monopoly. With a series of Disney animation films full of cute cuddly characters and typically fairy-tale stories and endings, Shrek really came as a breath of fresh farce and turned the animation world over. Even though Pixar was beginning to take charge with films such as Toy Story, Disney still ruled the animation planet and it seemed like DreamWorks had kind of pulled the rug from underneath them. ‘Shrek’ was also the first Oscar winning film in the category of the animated feature film and was also a commercial success. This paved the way for DreamWorks animation studio.

Another similar size hit that the studio produced was a few years later, just when it had started to seem that DreamWorks would be only one-film good that they came up with ‘Madagascar’. With lovable characters and an amazing storyline, this film too did really well critically as well as commercially.  They have quite a few hits and some huge ball parks hit to their credit, and they may be taking things slow now, but surely they are an animation studio to reckon with. DreamWorks seems to be in a position that is similar to the early days of Disney animation studio; where they are still experimenting and trying out all kinds of things to see what suits them the best.
